I partnered with several notable authors to develop, experiment, prove concepts and edit books during those early days of web design and development.
Book Contribution & Editing
Some of the most cutting edge authors and creators of web culture, Peter Small and Lynda Weinman and her brother Bil Weinman, chose me to contribute to several cutting edge books as the Web was coming of age.
Magical A-Life Avatars: Peter Small
Creating distributed collaboration and knowledge sharing environments which shared information across the internet before most people had browsers. Peter Small and a group of us used a tool called Macromedia Director and artificial intelligence algorithms to create virtual “cafes” where people could gather share knowledge, jointly answer questions and solve problems back in the days of dial-up internet connections. I sure wish we’d wrapped some IP around that idea 🙂
Creative HTML Design: Bill and Lynda Weinman
I was the technical editor on the first edition of this ground breaking book giving direction to a generation of early web designers to learn some of the evolving techniques and principles around this burgeoning field. Lynda was an inspiration and thought leader to many and went on to share these techniques and many others on her wildly successful site Lynda.com
The CGI Book: Bill Weinman
back before Flash, before Shockwave and before cable-modems there was CGI. (remember all those web addresses that had “cgi-bin” in them?
It was the Common Gateway Interface that let web sites do cool, somewhat interactive stuff. a member of a wildly creative family, Bill was at the cutting edge of what could be accomplished with CGI. This book taught the tricks of the trade to those who were trying to eek the most of of what were, in that time, mainly static web sites.
